Raw and Living Foods: Mental Clarity

One of the most interesting aspects of changing to a raw and living foods diet is the accompanying mental clarity that many people report. Whether it's the increased energy or the decreased toxins pumping through the system, most people find that after going mostly raw for several weeks, their minds grow sharper.

Why People Give Up Going Raw

Newcomers to a raw and living foods lifestyle often assume that food itself is the reason why people give up and return to cooked foods. They assume that boredom or difficulty eating raw and living foods forced people to abandon this new way of eating and living. While this may be true, the clarity that emerges after detoxification often forces people out of their comfort zones to confront long-standing challenges, whether it's in work, relationships, family, friends, or other areas.  And moving out of one's comfort zone can be scary. Like a child clutching a teddy bear, we cling to what is familiar to deal with the uncomfortable.

The Positives of Mental Clarity

Having a sharp, quick mind is one of the many benefits of eating raw and living foods. Suddenly decisions are easier, and intuition grows sharper. You may find that you have more energy and thus can take on more tasks, but your tasks list grows focused. You start to intuitively "know" what works and what doesn't in your schedule.

Many people find that perhaps for the first times in their lives they focus on what is truly important. Relationships rise as something of prime importance. Whereas status, possessions and work used to be important, now one's relationships with family, friends, pets and even the environment become more important than acquiring and maintaining possessions.

The Drawbacks

But as with most things in life, increased mental clarity has drawbacks as well as positives. Those who embark on a raw, living food journey may suddenly confront uncomfortable truths. As mental clarity grows, they see in crystal-clear, 20/20 vision that some things in their lives no longer work. Something is out of place and doesn't fit the new reality you are experiencing. For some people, a job they have grown comfortable with no longer feels comfortable. They start to question their life's work and new avenues open up. For others, a marriage that was kept alive through habit can now be seen through the clean lens of a clarified mind. Relationships that were kept from habit, convenience or greed must now be reviewed, accepted, changed or severed, depending upon the situation and the people involved.

Embrace Change – Live Life to the Fullest

Saying "Don't give up!" to someone struggling is like telling a drowning person "Just swim!" It's much better to throw someone a life preserver than to stand on the shore shouting instructions on how to do the breast stroke.

To embrace you new, clear mind, consider the following:

•    Make haste slowly. Not everything you perceive as out of harmony needs to be changed right away. Don't try to fix everything at once.
•    Give yourself time.
•    Consider your options. Sometimes time unkinks the kinks in our lives better than we can if we sat and tried to do it ourselves.

Whatever you do, don't abandon all the positive changes you're life. Find others to share your raw food journey, and you will find the voices of experience to guide you through it.
