Sugar Detoxification Critical for Weight Loss

sugar detoxification

For those just beginning their journey into raw and living foods, the obvious first substances to detoxify are obvious: alcohol, drugs, tobacco.  As people continue their journey and eat healthy, raw foods several times a day, they may wonder why they aren't losing weight rapidly. The answer may be in sneaky white sugar.

White Sugar's Power

William Duffy, in his book Sugar Blues, details the long history of refined sugar. As soon as sugar entered the human diet among sailors (the first to import the new food) and royalty (the only ones who could afford it), myriad health problems resulted.  Sailors found their teeth rotting and their health deteriorating. Royalty developed all sorts of painful and debilitating diseases, including dental problems, gout, diabetes and more.  Duffy and others also believe that sugar is as addictive as heroin! Whether you believe sugar takes a physical hold by carving pathways in the body's neurochemistry similar to a drug addition, or it's simply an emotional or mental addiction, sugar addiction can be toxic.

Sugar's Effects

Even if you reduce your total caloric intake through the initial phases of eating raw and living foods, you may not lose weight if sugar remains in your diet.  Here's one theory of why this happens.

When sugar is ingested, insulin is pumped out of the pancreas. Insulin is a powerful hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Without proper insulin levels, we would get very sick or die because our blood glucose levels would rise too high or drop too low.  The brain and every cell in the body need the energy released by metabolizing blood glucose in order to remain alive.

The problem lies in processed white sugar's quick and rapid effect upon the body. The human body developed over the centuries on a diet of raw, living plant foods. Our ancestors gathered fruits, nuts and vegetation. They raised crops. Later on they did begin cooking foods and hunted meat, although it is likely that our far distant ancestors consumed only raw plant material gathered in the wild – and since we're here today, they did quite well on that diet!

White sugar is a manmade substance derived from sugar cane. It's as far from the natural plant as you can get. It's quick hit stresses the pancreas and liver as they struggle to deal with the spike in sugar available. If the sudden flush of glucose is not needed, it is stored for later use. Insulin encourages cells to store the excess as fat.

Many people will find that even on a lower calorie diet, they struggle to lose weight. The sugar continues to signal the body to store fat.

How to Stop the Sugar Blues

It's time to take the next step on the raw food journey and beat the sugar blues. Detoxification from sugar can take weeks, months or years.

Begin by eliminating the obvious sources of sugar. Stop eating cookies, candy and cakes. Raw food chocolates are a delicious alternative if you "must" have something sweet.  Stevia is an herbal sugar substitute that doesn't cause blood sugar spikes. You can actually obtain little stevia plants from mail order nurseries; it can grow on a sunny windowsill. Simply snip and crush a few leaves for a sweet taste or sun dry the leaves and powder them to make your own herbal sweetener.

Drink plenty of water during the detoxification phase.  Sugar is highly acidic, so if you can obtain ionized alkaline water, it's an excellent detoxification aid. Greens such as spirulina and chlorella are also nourishing, alkalizing, and great for sugar detoxification.

Unchain the Sugar Shackles

Once you unchain the sugar shackles and detoxify from sugar, you may be surprised at how rapidly you lose weight. Without the huge spikes in glucose from white sugar, the body has enough fuel from foods, and can naturally release the stored fat.  Fresh, healthy life-giving enzymes begin to infuse your cells with life, pushing out the old and tired with new life. The acid-alkaline balance shifts, and the more alkalizing the foods, the better it is for weight loss.

Sugar may seem innocent. After all, we say something is as "easy as taking candy from a baby", implying that babies have candy; we give candy to children on Halloween; doctors used to give lollipops to children to soothe them.  But something that can rot our teeth, destroy our body's abilities to manage blood glucose, and make us fat isn't worth the momentary pleasure. Find your pleasure in raw, sweet fruits and wonderful healthy alternatives.  Here's to sugar detoxification to lose weight!
