remedies for sore throats, colds and other ailmentsIt’s fascinating to me that mere ingredients such as honey, cayenne, and vinegar–staples many households have sitting in their cabinets—can actually be used as natural medicine to heal our bodies!

Tips for staying on the raw road—even when you’re sick...
What’s a raw foodist to do when they’re feeling under the weather and don’t want to bombard their bodies with chemical-laden liquids, capsules, or tablets? Of course, you don’t have to be a raw food advocate to take these raw remedies. Anyone can enjoy the healing benefits!
Following are the ingredients and directions for a few simple and inexpensive (raw) cold and other ailment remedies.


This first recipe is one I just call a “Raw Cold and Other Ailment Tonic”:

Ingredients:

· 1/4 cup (raw) honey
· 1/4 cup (raw) organic apple cider vinegar (with Mother--the living enzymes that haven´t been removed by processing)
· 1/2 teaspoon organic cayenne powder

Directions:

· Combine the above raw ingredients in a jar or bottle that has a snug-fitting lid. (An empty honey bear is an excellent choice for storing your raw tonic, especially if you’re trying to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle and recycle/re-use everything you can.)
· Once everything is in its container, shake it up really well.
· Store in a cabinet or fridge—it keeps either way.

Dosage Information:

· Adults: Take 1 tablespoon up to 9 times a day (This raw remedy is strong, so you’ll probably only take it 3-4 times a day.)

· Children and youth: Take 1 teaspoon or 1 tablespoon 3-4 times a day, depending on their weight and size. (An especially slim, petite child would take the teaspoon. A more robust, stocky child could take the 1 tablespoon.)

· Little ones: Again, depending upon size and weight, they can take ¼ to ½ teaspoon no more than 2-3 times a day. For children under two, consult a naturopathic physician or herbalist if possible.

Although this combination is quite tart and will cause most to pucker and make a fish face, this raw remedy attacks the infection that is making you sick. The organic vinegar* kills the bacteria and is loaded with potassium and vitamin C and many minerals and amino acids. Raw honey* is not only soothing to the throat but also contains anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. Cayenne* improves circulation, fights inflammation, congestion, and works to draw out the infection.
Note: Just remember to shake well before each use!

A quick remedy to soothe your raw throat…
This raw remedy is a miracle when you’ve been coughing incessantly, or if your throat is scratchy, raw, and sore.

Ingredients:

· 1 tablespoon (raw) honey
· few sprinkles of organic cinnamon powder

Directions:

· Heat the honey just a little until it’s slightly warm.
· Stir in the cinnamon powder.
· Drink the concoction.

Tip:

If you have something like a shot glass (a glass one, not plastic), you can simply put the ingredients into that and set it near a burner or a hot place for a few seconds or a minute and warm it that way.
You’ll notice as the honey-cinnamon combo travels down your throat, you’ll feel a soothing sensation and will experience relief for a while, sometimes even all night.

Honey-Cinnamon Tea Remedy

Ingredients:


· 1 teaspoon (or 1 tablespoon) raw honey (depending on age, size, and choice.)
· 1 teaspoon (or 1 tablespoon) raw organic apple cider vinegar
· 1 cup of water heated in a tea kettle—not the microwave

Directions:

· Pour the raw honey and vinegar into a cup.
· Add the hot water.
· Stir and sip.
· Sprinkle in a little cinnamon or cayenne—or both (optional).
This tea not only soothes your throat; like I mentioned above it’s filled with vitamin C, potassium, and infection-fighting nutrients that will give you strength and help you get well.

Note: These honey and cinnamon/cayenne remedies are also excellent aids in congestion, weight loss, heart conditions, diabetes, arthritis, digestion, acid reflux, and many other health ailments.

Caution: If you’re taking a prescription blood thinner (such as Coumadin or Wayfarin, you cannot safely consume vinegar --it is a natural blood thinner). Raw organic vinegar, although it is a blood cleanser, purifier, and natural blood thinner, doesn’t thin the blood enough to cause harm—unless you’re already taking a blood-thinning medication. Otherwise, organic vinegar is an exceptional raw ingredient that can be used a myriad of ways to improve your overall health, including your hair, skin, and nails.
