According to "Naturopathic Medicine" the single greatest thing that you can do for your health is to detoxify your liver and gallbladder.

The liver is an absolutely amazing organ. A mere 30 years ago, the liver was identified to have around 300 functions. Now we know that it has over 600 functions.  The liver can be up to 80% destroyed and given what it needs it can still completely rebuild itself.

Chronic liver disease is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and is responsible for more than 25,000 deaths per year.

The Liver's Main Responsibilities

•    To metabolize protein, fat and carbohydrates to produce energy and nutrients
•    Filters the blood removing harmful chemicals and bacteria
•    Makes bile to break down the fats that you eat
•    Produces between 1 and 1.5 quarts of bile per day
•    Synthesizes the bile and delivers it to the gallbladder for storage until needed in the digestive processes
•    Signals that fat is on the way and needs to be emulsified so that the gallbladder will then send the bile into the small intestines  for the purpose of emulsifying the fat
•    Stores extra blood that can be used in times of extra need or stress
•    Helps maintain electrolyte balances and along with the adrenals and kidneys helps maintain the water balance of the body's fluids
•    Breaks down and eliminates excess hormones such as estrogen
•    The key organ in managing PMS or Menopausal symptoms
•    Aids in the repair of diseased or damaged tissues
•    Helps eliminate waste from food and environmental toxins

According to acupuncture, the liver meridian flows through different parts of the body especially influencing the eyes, digestion, tendons, muscles and the sexual organs.

When the Liver and/or the gallbladder are not functioning well, most frequently, its functions are impeded due to the formation of liver and gallstones.  The liver is connected to every part of the body and has the immense capacity to handle billions of chemical reactions every second.  The liver's optimal functioning is impeded by the retention of "sludge" which causes the formation of stones.  Often it is mentioned that there are gallstones however, equally important there are liver stones as well.
