What You Put On Your Skin You Put Into Your Body

Share/Save/Bookmark

what you put on your skinIt is true, you know, topical application of creams and liquids onto the surface of the body readily penetrates the skins surface and the ingredients are absorbed into systemic circulation.  Now, knowing that, don’t you cringe as you look back over the years of all of the scented, perfumed and sudsy products with who knows what preservatives in them that you willingly applied to every part of your body in the name of Beauty?

In keeping with our previous article that outlined what to read for in your supplement labels, today we are going to take a journey into what the FDA is allowing us to apply to our skin.  There are primarily eight categories of chemicals that are deemed to be harmful and toxic to your body over prolonged use.  Unfortunately, it is because of this prolonged use that you most likely will not recognize the compromised condition that your body is gravitated toward until it is too late.  So get out your (previously) favorite hand cream and shampoo and let’s take a look:

1)    Propylene Glycol—Ultimately a skin-aging agent, this is a cheap, synthetic petrochemical used as an emulsifying base in creams and lotions to make the skin look smooth.  The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) tells you to avoid skin contact with it because it is a skin irritant!  It can denature the skin’s protein, leading to poor, saggy skin.  It can also be absorbed through your skin and potentially cause allergic reactions, including liver and kidney damage.

2)    Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)—This is a harsh, caustic detergent that is used for two reasons: it is cheap and it sudses well.  You will readily find it in all of your commercial shampoos, soaps, facial cleansers, etc.  You will also find it as an engine degreaser and garage floor cleaner!

SLS has many potential side effects over prolonged use, including having a degenerative effect on the cell membranes and denaturing protein found in the hair and skin, leading to aged skin and poor hair, or even hair loss.  SLS even has the ability to cause cataracts through skin absorption, even though there is no direct contract with the eye.  From skin contact, SLS can be absorbed into the circulation system and concentrate in your organs, such as your heart, liver or brain.  SLS is a mutagen, capable of changing the information in the genetic material of your cells and organs.

3)    Fragrance—What a big selling point this is, isn’t it?  Don’t we all want to
smell good to the opposite sex?  Now, when you see the word “Fragrance” listed on a label—think a synthetic fragrance made in a test tube from any of over 200 synthetic chemicals.  These chemicals can bio-accumulate in your organs and can cause many symptoms, such as headaches, lung problems, skin irritation, dizziness, memory impairment, rash and more.  Next time you want to smell nice—think real herbal scents.

4)    Mineral Oil—This is a cheap petroleum based oil that clogs the skin’s pores
and enlarges them, leading to poor, saggy skin.  It also decreases the ability of the skin cells to exchange nutrients and waste products.  Some may develop allergic reactions and skin irritations.

5)    Parabens (Propyl, Methyl, Butyl or Ethyl)—These are cheap preservatives
used to inhibit microbial growth in skin and hair care products, even though they are known to be highly toxic.

6)    Imidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl Urea—After the Paraben family, these are
the most commonly used preservatives.  They are an established cause of contact dermatitis and release formaldehyde, which is toxic (American Academy of Dermatology).

7)    Synthetic Colors—Avoid any colored products at all costs, including hair
dyes, with the exception of some henna products.  They can cause allergy, skin and nerve problems.  Synthetic colors are labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a number and color.

8)    Triethanolamine (TEA)—This is often used in the base of a product and to
adjust the pH.  TEA causes allergic reactions, including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin and can be toxic if absorbed into the body over time.

There you have it!  But how are we going to remain beautiful without all of our potions and lotions?  When I first learned about all of the hazards and pitfalls associated with the use of standard commercially prepared products, I began my research with the same company that has been supplying me with premier quality supplements—Premier Research Labs.  They have done their homework so well and so thoroughly as to have made available to their clients the optimum in toxic-tag-a-long free body care products.  I first experimented with their Premier Shampoo and Premier Hair Conditioner.  While the results were great, using them took a bit of getting used to.  You see, that without SLS, you have very few suds.  While the cleansing properties of the shampoo are unsurpassed, you are washing your hair sans-suds---a little weird at first, but worth the effort.

All of these products contain Electromagnetically Changed Organic Particles (ECOPs), with move to polarize your own cells to a much higher electron-spin state.  This means that the uptake of nutrients into the cell is magnified 100 times greater than ordinary products.  That is truly great nutrition for your hair and scalp.

My next adventure into pure skin care came with Premier DNA Repair Cream.  I was looking for a super hydrating cream and found a face-lift in a jar.  Among other things, Premier DNA Cream contains the rare and expensive Italian hyaluronic acid as its main ingredient, supported by Quercetin and DHLA, the probiotic-derived most active anti-oxidant on the market, real Vitamin E Complex and much more with no toxic preservatives.  What I found to be most interesting as I used this product, was that over the first three month period age marks, one in particular, actually disappeared—not by fading, but by actually peeling off of my face, layer by layer!

Further exploration into this product line first had me experiment with Premier Ozonated Gel, a natural deodorant.  The jar will last almost a lifetime, as such a little bit is needed—and not even every day.  Great for the traveler.  But, I actually decided to use the Premier Deodorant Spray as my mainstay after showering with their Premier Bar Soap in several scents.  The soap is the longest lasting bar soap I have ever used—the price is worth it.

Finally, in my experimentation, I added Premier Hand & Body Lotion for my skin along with Premier Lipid Complex and Premier Skin Serum.

With my beauty regimen pretty much revamped, I thought I had all the bases covered, until I realized several important aspects that I had yet to even entertain; the indoor air that I breathe, the water that I drink and the water that I bathe in.  Wow—how could I overlook such basics?  Though, how many of us do overlook them everyday?  Returning to my trusted PR Labs, I began researching what they had to say about air pollutants in the home.  Unfortunately, I found out that we typically inhale the equivalent of two heaping tablespoons of airborne particles daily and approximately 64,000 people die prematurely each year from heart and lung disease due to particulate air pollution.  This information did not even cover the indoor pollution caused by outgassing of chemicals from carpet, drapes, furniture, paint, etc.  Their recommendation was the products offered by Austin Air Purifiers.

Now for my water.  Bottled water is out.  Not only because of the land-fill waste, but due to the fact that you cannot be sure just how pure the water is.  My recommendation to you is not only to purify your water, but also raise your pH with one of the LifeIonizer products.  I have been using the larger model for over a year with extremely good results, both in water purity and in raising my pH.  And finally, you may be surprised to learn that most of the chlorine that you ingest enters your body during your shower.  As the heat of the shower increases, the poisonous chlorine gas enters your lungs as well as your pores.  I turned to PR Lab’s easy to install Shower Filter once again to rid myself of this insidious toxin in our water supply and promote softer, healthier skin.
